  In het zuiden van
Amerika, vlakbij Atlanta, ligt Tara, de katoenplantage van Gerald O'Hara (Thomas Mitchell) en zijn familie. Het werk
wordt nog gedaan door zwarte slaven. Tijdens een grote barbecue op het landgoed van de buren Wilkes wordt er door de
aanwezige mannen gesproken over de op handen zijnde oorlog met de noorderlingen, de Yankees. De oudste dochter Scarlett
O'Hara (Vivien Leigh) is ook op de barbecue en weet alle jonge mannen het hoofd op hol te brengen. Maar zijzelf is
verliefd op Ashley Wilkes (Leslie Howard), die echter op zijn beurt zijn huwelijk aankondigt met Melanie Hamilton
(Olivia de Havilland). Om Ashley jaloers te maken trouwt ze hals over kop met Charles Hamilton (Rand Brooks), de broer
van Melanie, maar van hem houden doet ze niet. Dat doet ze alleen van Ashley. De meeste mannen zien een oorlog met de
noorderlingen wel zitten, maar zo niet Rhett Butler (Clark Gable), die de zuiderlingen geen schijn van kans geeft. Zijn
opmerkingen lokt alleen maar boze reacties uit. De burgeroorlog breekt uit en zowel Ashley als Charles nemen dienst en
Charles overlijdt al binnen afzienbare tijd. Scarlett gaat een ogenschijnlijke rouwperiode in, maar de dood van Charles
doet haar weinig. Om iets om handen te hebben vertrekt ze naar Atlanta, zogenaamd om te helpen met fondsenwerving voor
de soldaten, maar eigenlijk om dichterbij Ashley te zijn, mocht hij terugkeren van het front. In Atlanta ontmoet ze
Rhett Butler weer, die deze eigenzinnige dame wel ziet zitten. De Yankees rukken steeds verder op en Atlanta ligt zwaar
onder vuur. Het is er niet veilig meer en Scarlett besluit terug te gaan naar het vredige landgoed Tara. Maar dat is
volledig geplunderd door de Yankees en naast het gezin zijn alleen de trouwe huisbedienden Pork (Oscar Polk) en Mammy
(Hattie McDaniel) nog aanwezig. Maar iedereen is getroffen uit de strijd gekomen en Scarlett staat er zo'n beetje alleen
voor. Maar ze is vastbesloten om van Tara weer een goedlopende katoenplantage te maken.
  
  This tale of the
Old South from the start of the Civil War through to the period of reconstruction focuses on the beautiful Scarlett
O'Hara. Before the start of the war life at the O'Hara plantation, Tara, could only be described as genteel. As for the
young Scarlett, she is without doubt the most beautiful girl in the area and is always the belle of the ball. She is
very much looking forward to a barbecue at the nearby Wilkes plantation as she will get to see the man she loves, Ashley
Wilkes. She is more than a little dismayed when she hears that he is to marry his cousin Melanie Hamilton and in a fit
of anger, she decides to marry Melanie's brother. War is soon declared and as always seems to be the case, men march off
to battle thinking that it will only last a few weeks. Now living in Atlanta, Scarlett sees the ravages that war brings.
She also becomes re-acquainted with Rhett Butler, whom she had first met at the Wilkes barbecue. Now a widow, she still
pines for the married Ashley and dreams of his return. With the war lost however, she returns to Tara and faces the
hardship of keeping her family together and Tara from being sold at auction to collect the taxes. She has becomes
hardened and bitter and will do anything, including marrying her sister's beau, to ensure she will never again be poor
and hungry. After becoming a widow for the second time, she finally marries the dashing Rhett but they soon find
themselves working at cross-purposes, their relationship seemingly doomed from the outset.
